Taicharter in solid trial

Special correspondent Hastings

Taicharter rounded off her preparation for tomorrow’s Wanganui meeting with a solid 800 m in company with Tallboy on the Hastings track yesterday morning.

Fast work was done on the plough and No. 1 grass. Both were in good order. There was nothing between Taicharter and Tallboy at the end of 800 m on the plough in 50s, the last 600 m in 375. This was a good even gallop and both horses pulled up well after it.

Taicharter contests the Douglas Clague 6000 m at Wanganui, where Noel Harris will ride her. She has a wide draw but her brilliant early speed could overcome this.

Tiffany Chin, one of Taicharter’s rivals tomorrow, was let off with a 600 m gallop yesterday and finished strongly in 37.35. Exocet was one of only a few horses to use the No. 1 grass and he ran 600 m in 37.15. The War Hawk II gelding could hardly be expected to figure in the finish of the Tim Rogers Stakes, with the 1600 m too short for him and the opposition of a highest quality. The apprentice, Peter Ayres, will ride him. Time honours went to

Lampoon and Shambell which sped over 800 m on the No. 1 grass in 48s, the last 600 m in 365.

Lampoon is a half-brother to Burletta by Avaray. He is trained by Patrick Campbell. Shambell is by Shahram and is in Don Sellwood’s stable. Tommo’s Tornado and Apache Queen ran 800 m on the plough in 49.95, the last 600 m in 37.75. This was good work by Tommo’s Tornado, which looks to be coming up well in a fresh campaign. Trainer, Rose Durrant, would like to start the horse’s four-year-old campaign with a 1200 m race but says it is hard to find a suitable one. She may set him for next month’s Franklin meeting. Thrive gave a glimpse of her ability by coasting over 800 m on the plough in 49.65, the last 600 m in 37.25. The trainer, Don Sellwood, intends to give her a run at next Thursday’s Hastings trials.
