Clues sought to body in hole

PA Gisborne Detectives hunting for clues in a homicide inquiry after the finding of a man’s body four metres down a hole, interviewed a number of people during the weekend, but his identity had not been confirmed yesterday. The body was found in the Ruatoria district. Chief Inspector Mick Huggard said that 27 detectives were working on the case. Mr Huggard said the man’s fingerprints would be sent to Wellington today, along with other exhibits, including an axe found beside the body. The man was believed to be one of a group of Rastafarians who have been living in the Ruatoria district for several months. A member of the group has been missing for three weeks after failing to report on bail for a court hearing. Two members of the group discovered the body while walking in the hill country. The hole where the body was found is thought to be part of workings by European goldminers last century, and is on land on Whakahu station not far from the hut used by the Rastafarian group.
