Botham breaks sixes record

NZPA-Reuter London The England all-rounder, lan Botham, broke a record which had stood for 50 years when he took his tally of sixes for the season to 74. The Somerset skipper hammered four sixes in a 53ball half century against Northamptonshire at Weston Super Mare to break Arthur Wellard’s mark of 66 in an English first class season. Botham had begun his onslaught on Wellard’s total with 10 sixes in the county championship match against

Nottinghamshire at Taunton in April. He followed this 1 with 12 against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

Botham went on to hit 134, his fifth century of the summer, out of a Somerset total of 409.

His 147-ball innings included 10 sixes - taking his tally for the season to 74 - and eight fours.

He and Jonathan Atkinson, aged 17, put on 177 for the seventh wicket in 31 overs, Atkinson hitting three sixes and 11 fours in his 79.
