Runaway win for N.Z. basketballers
PA Tauranga The New Zealand men’s basketball team ran away for a 104-66 win in the first of two matches against Southern California College All Stars in Tauranga last evening. The teams clash again in Hamilton tonight. The New Zealand players held a distinct height advantage and physically overwhelmed their opponents. Facing an early 18-9 deficit, the All Stars recovered with a series of outside shots to be two points behind.
But that proved their only challenge, New Zealand breaking away for a 48-31 half-time lead and, though using all of its bench, dominating possession in the second half.
John Hill, Stan Hill and the junior guard, Tony Smith, had oustanding first halves for New Zealand, while exciting newcomer Byron Vaetoe showed some spectacular skills in the second half.
Stan Hill, who with his brother, John, dominated the boards, top-scored with 21 points, followed by Alan Ovens, 16, and Tony Smith, 15.
