Belgians lure McLeod

Eddie McLeod, the American-based forward who has just completed his first season for the Countrywide national men’s basketball league team, Converse Canterbury, has been contracted to play for the Belgian first division side, Ghent, for the next eight months. Last evening, McLeod confirmed the appointment, saying that he had been approached by the Belgian

club this week which offered him a position as a forward, or a- swingman, starting from the end of August. The contract is worth SUS2O,OOO, plus free accommodation and bonuses. Earlier in the week, McLeod was approached also by a West German team. McLeod, who has been told by the Canterbury Basketball Association that it has yet to decide on its

plans for a second American player to join its present encumbent, Clyde Huntley, intends to leave Christchurch for Belgium on August 19. McLeod still harbours thoughts of being able to return to Canterbury. “If an offer was made before, or even after, I go, I would attempt to negotiate with my new club to be back in . time for the 1986 New Zealand season,” he said.
