McCarroll in top form
On current form, Grant McCarroll must be favoured to win his first Canterbury open table tennis title, when the championships are contested at the Selwyn Street hall today. Ahead of McCarroll, the top seed, and winner of the South Island and A grade residential events recently, are some tough, competitive opponents. The second seed is Ling Nan Ming, who is making a return to A grade play after an absence of several seasons. He is a former South Island and Canterbury champion.
Mike Burrowes is the third seed and the durable
veteran, John Armstrong, is placed fourth. The gifted young Karl Entwistle has gained fifth ranking ahead of the national women’s champion, Jan Morris. The erratic left-hander, John Richards, has been seeded seventh and, interestingly, Michael Hamel, with just three inter-club matches behind him this winter, is the eighth seed. He is sure to be rusty but, as a former top 10 player in New Zealand, will put up a solid challenge. Miss Morris predictably heads the women’s seedings, ahead of the Swedish player, Bodil Martinsson. The finals
will be contested tonight, the junior championships tomorrow. The women’s seedings are: Miss Morris 1, Miss Martinsson 2, Monique van der Aa 3, Thelma May 4. Men’s doubles: Burrowes and Ling 1, Richards and McCarroll 2, Richard Dixon and Hamel 3, Mike and Kevin Brosnahan (South Canterbury) 4. Women’s doubles.— Morris and Martinsson 1, van der Aa and May 2. Mixed doubles: Hamel and Miss Morris 1, McCarroll and Miss van der Aa 2, Richards and Mrs May 3, M. Brosnahan and Maxine Goldie (West Coast) 4.
