Early lead holds for 470 pair

PA Wellington New Zealand’s Jon Bilger and Jarrod Kriletich yesterday won the world youth 470 yachting championships on Lake Como, Italy. The Auckland pair finished eighteenth and fifth in the last two races but had built up such a commanding lead that they still won by a convincing margin. Bilger, a former Olympic yachtsman, phoned the Yachting Federation in Auckland from Lake Como with the news early yesterday. He said that New Zealand had finished with 21.7 points, Italy was second with 38 points and East Germany third on 41 points.

The contest attracted 48 boats from 15 countries.

Bilger and Kriletich scored two seconds and a third in the first three races and were 18 points clear of the second placed boat going into the final two races.

It had been intended to contest the championships over six races. The series ended yesterday, however, because of high winds after the third race caused the organisers to cancel two days racing. The win by Bilger, aged 16, and Kriletich, aged 17, continues New Zealand’s fine record in the Olympic class. David Barnes and Hamish Willcox were the reigning world champions.
