Warning on Maori demands

The growing demands of Maoridom are evolving as New Zealand’s “own brand of separatism,” according to the Democratic Party’s spokesman on race relations, Mr Jim Elder.
The growing demands by Maoris to have their language recognised, place names restored, and lands returned were part of a growing swell towards recognition of worth.
That need for acknowledgement, for personal standing and dignity, was felt by ,everyone, particularly at a time when morale was so depressed. For the Maori, the recognition was to build up self-image by developing their distinctive Maoritanga. It was evolving, however, as a brand of separatism, and there was a warning there for the Government, Mr Elder said.
Labour had to stop its “programme of political gamesmanship” or the potential for racial disharmony w r ould grow.
