School music contest finals
The Westpac School Music Contest finals will be held in Wellington this week-end. The contest, organised by the Music Federation, is in its twentieth year. The contest has grown in size and prestige since it began in 1965. It was then a contest for small groups of instrumentalists. It involved 300 musicians. Now the contest includes sections for larger instrumental groups, vocal groups and compositions. Last year almost 3000 pupils participated. Westpac has provided sponsorship since 1966. The contest is organised in two stages. Each June 12 or 13 district contests are
held. Once all the district finals have been held the adjudicators announce the finalists, usually four small instrumental groups, two large instrumental groups and two vocal groups. Participants in the national final are flown to Wellington. The final takes the form of a public concert at which each group performs. The winning composition entries are also given demonstration performances. Thirty-nine groups entered the Christchurch district finals in June. The Christchurch winners were the Levar Trio and the Burnside High School Chorale.
