Terrible Tom, Chch ballet

“Terrible Tom,” the Royal New Zealand Ballet Company’s schools production, is an all-Christchurch effort. The company decided to produce a ballet with a story-line rather than its more usual use of excerpts from full ballets or of dancers showing different techniques. The ballet was written by children’s author Gavin Bishop, choreographed by Southern Ballet’s artistic director Russell Kerr and the score composed by musician Philip Norman. The production is aimed at intermediate and primary schools. It has been toured sue-

cessfully throughout the North Island and will be danced to school audiences in Christchurch during the ballet company’s “The Rake’s Progress” season next week The ballet tells the story of Tom, a naughty boy. Much of the story takes place in a park. Tom decides he wants to make a bird costume and runs away so that he can. Several of the characters are the animals he meets in the park. The ballet will be danced on August 15 and 16 at 1 p.m. in the James Hay Theatre. The company begins its “The Rake’s Progress” season on August 14.
