Memorable images
An exhibition by one of the world’s leading photographers, Henri CartierBresson, will be brought to New Zealand this month by American Express. The work shown spans the photographer’s travels in Europe, Asia, and America. The exhibition opens in Wellington’s National Art Gallery on August 30 and will run until October 20. It will then be shown at the Fisher Gallery, in Auckland, from November 4 to December 3. Cartier-Bresson, now 77, has been described as “the. man responsible for more memorable images than any other photographer in his time.” With two friends, Robert Capa and David “Chim” Seymour, he was one of the
first photographers to begin experimenting with the Leica, a revolutionary small 35mm camera, which had a fast lens and used fast film. This gave the photo-
grapher great mobility and the ability to pho.tograph unnoticed. Cartier-Bresson has also built up a large and distinctive photographic collection.
