August Sander
The Arts Centre will host an exhibition of works by the German photographer August Sander in the Centre Gallery from August 12-16. Entitled “People of the Twentieth Century,” the exhibition is a socio-historical narrative of German life, deeply rooted in the peasant background of which Sander was a part. The realistic, analytical style of the exhibition closely links Sander’s work with the social issues preva-
lent during a career which spanned two World Wars and a major economic depression. Striving to suppress any sense of the poetic in his work, Sander portrays an objective confrontation with life. Through an uncompromising use of the camera, this exhibition has attracted the attention of sociologists and historians alike, and has recently finished a popular showing in Wellington.
