Back to Bach series
The third concert in the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra’s “Back to Bach” series will be on this Sunday. The orchestra will be joined by the Wellingtonbased conductor, William Southgate, who will present a programme of Grainger, Handel, Copland, Bach, and Dorothy Buchanan. The opening work, by Percy Grainger, is scored
for piano and strings and can be played on up to 20 pianos. The C.S.O. has opted for just the one. The Sunday afternoon concert in the Christchurch Town Hall will also feature C.S.O. oboist Keith Sayers playing a Handel oboe concerto. Aaron Copland’s Pulitzerprize winning “Appalachian Spring” will be performed in its original movement for
13 instruments. The ballet suite was composed in 1945 and choreographed by Martha Graham. The orchestra’s string section will perform “Three Sketches for Wind Octet” by Dorothy Buchanan. The final work will be the Orchestral Suite No 3 by J. S. Bach, which features “Air on a G String.” The concert begins at 3 p.m.
