Alternative fuels decision postponed

PA Auckland The Cabinet has put off indefinitely any decisions on the incentives scheme for converting vehicles to alternative fuels, said an Energy Ministry spokesman. It is believed to have considered several recommendations on Government assistance, which is scheduled to be phased out by the end of next year. A spokesman for the Minister of Energy, Mr Tizard, said the matter had been

deferred indefinitely. Vehicle owners now have to pay a 25 per cent deposit on the cost of conversion and $l5O for the kit when converting to compressed natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas. Speaking in Auckland at the opening of Energex 85, Mr Tizard said the alternative fuels industry should now be at a stage where it was capable of being less dependent on Government support.
