Maternity benefit tribunal
PA Wellington A tribunal to decide the level of maternity benefits to be paid to doctors will sit for four days in Wellington from August 29. The New Zealand Medical Association will present its submissions first, followed by the Health Department. After cross-examination, members of the public will have the opportunity to comment before the tribunal adjourns to allow all parties to consider their position. Doctors had threatened to pull out of the maternity benefit scheme if the $6.18 benefit was not reviewed urgently. Heading the tribunal will be Mr Ralph Wylie, a barrister, of Christchurch. The other two members are Dr W. Fraser of Hamilton whose name was put forward by the Medical Association, and Mr C. H. Terry of Wellington, selected by the Minister of Health, Dr Bassett.
