Lake levels

PA Timaru South Island lakes are at their lowest levels since the Electricity Division of the Ministry of Energy began its records in 1976. The lakes are at 58.7 per cent of their capacity, while North Island lakes are at 79.1 per cent. The levels were taken on July 21. The levels were lower than the department would like, said Mr J. P. F. Robinson, the district manager, Dunedin. The lack of water meant higher fuel bills. In the week ending July 21, $4,650,000 of fuel was used to generate electricity. Hydro storage was being conserved, by running other power stations to keep the lakes at reasonable levels, Mr Robinson said. Lake Tekapo, for ex-

ample, is at 704.61 metres, while its maximum is 709.70 m. The lowest level it can function at is 702.1 m. Lake Pukaki is at 527.02 m. Its maximum is 532 m and minimum, 518.20 m.
