Increased rates
Sir,—No wonder Merivale residents are so angry about their unjust astronomical rate increases. The system used to levy rates has been satisfactory in the past but went haywire this time because for some reason the Valuation Department went badly astray. Merivale people could reasonably expect the City Council to investigate the reason for this but the council fobs the residents off with threats of prosecution and by saying their property values just suddenly outpaced other areas. Property values in all areas have moved up strongly and the rate of increase difference between Merivale and other areas is probably not much different historically. Why is there suddenly this imbalance where some people pay 100 per cent more while others have reductions? Has someone instigated this “redistribution of wealth” or is it due to the amazing techniques employed by the Valuation Department where it does drive-by valuations. — Yours, etc W. J. C. ROYDS.
