‘T.A.B. profit system costing galloping $700,000’

By J. J. BOYLE Galloping was suffering at the expense of trotting and greyhound racing under the New Zealand Racing Authority’s present system of allocating T.A.B. profits, Mr John Fulton told members at the annual general meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club last evening. It was estimated that the loss to galloping under the present system was between $700,000 and $BOO,OOO a year, Mr Fulton said. Mr Fulton, a member of the executive of the New Zealand Racing Conference and a committee member of the C.J.C., said it was important that the returns made to galloping should be based on galloping’s contribution to total turnovers. Mr Fulton said there had also been a disappointing lack of progress towards the establishment of inter-track betting, which he believed was vital for the future wellbeing of racing.

The Government’s lack of response towards proposals to get the inter-track bet ting system introduced had left many racing administrators sadly disillusioned, said Mr Fulton. “We have been met with stony silence,” he added.
