Record-priced yearling
NZPA Lexington A colt by Nijinsky II was sold for ?U513.1 million (SNZ2S.B million) at the Keeneland, Kentucky, July selected yearling sales yesterday — a record ' by SUS2.'9 million. The yearling is out of My Charmer. Nijinsky 11, a son of Northern Dancer and a former European horse of the year, has sired more than 80 stakes winners, including Golden Fleece, champion three-year-old in England and Ireland. The yearling is a halfbrother to Seattle Slew. The colt was purchased
on behalf of Mr Robert Sangster, the British soccer pool magnate. Vincent O’Brien. Sangster’s trainer, described the horse as the best individual in the sale. He said that going into the bidding, they valued the horse at between “eight and 15 million dollars.” The previous purchase record was ?U510.2 million ($NZ20.09 million) paid in 1983 by Mr Sangster’s Aston Upthorpe stud for a colt by Northern Dancer out of My Bupers.
