Tough road to tourney
Canterbury has a difficult task if it is to reach the final of the national women’s soccer tournament, which will be held in NewPlymouth from August 5-10. Having been drawn in the tougher of the two sections of seven teams, Canterbury will begin and end its group play with stiff assignments. It will start with a match
against the South Island champion, Otago, and will end by playing Wellington, the beaten finalist in 1984. The national champion, Auckland, will be the firm favourite to advance to the semi-finals by winning section one. The other teams in that group are Southland, Waikato, Auckland B, Bay of Plenty, Marlborough and
Poverty Bay
Canterbury’s section two matches are, in order, against Otago, Taranaki, Manawatu, Nelson, Hawke’s Bay and, after a bye, Wellington. The top two teams in each section will qualify for the semi-finals. The Canterbury squad will be announced next week.
