Maori language
Sir,—Why is the loss of the Maori language being blamed on the pakeha? My school friend was a Welsh girl who spoke English well, yet in her home her parents insisted that only Welsh was spoken. The Welsh are the old Britons who retreated into the mountains when invaded, and have followed their own lifestyle. However, they also live quite happily amongst the rest of the island’s population. I am the first to agree the Maori language should be kept alive and well; but I do not think the onus of teaching it should fall upon the pakeha. It is really great if the Maori wants to wear pakeha clothes, and follow that way of life, but he should not be forced to. The recent Telethon demonstrated we are a great united nation in our own individual ways — why can’t it go on? — Yours, etc., H. TURNER. July 1, 1985.
