Unlit cycles

Sir,—Tim Kerr makes the amazing statement that unlit cyclists are visible to motorists when under normal street lighting and that most cyclists are knocked off their cycles by young male motorists under the influence of alcohol. I strongly challenge these statements and ask Mr Kerr to produce supporting statistics. The majority of motorists will verify that unlit cyclists are not easily seen under any kind of street lighting, and not at all where there is none. Further we understand that these cyclists are involved in accidents because they are unseen. To place the blame on motorists is unfair. To blame young drunk males goes beyond the bounds of credibility. Unlit cyclists are the cause of their own Sounding a horn at them is hot only

pointless, it is also illegal and will do nothing to solve the problem. — Yours, etc., L. TOBECK. Waikuku Beach, July 3, 1985.
