Rate increases
Sir,—lt amazes me that the papers have not been full of letters from indignant Merivale citizens protesting against the extortionate rates increase. What bureaucratic twit is blindly following the dictates of avaricious property developers who have pushed land prices beyond the bounds of reason? Who has suddenly decided that property in Merivale is now worth 50 to 100 per cent more than it was this time last year? I have lived for 10 years in a tatty little street full of potholes. Why is it now 50 per cent more desirable? The City Council is crippling Merivale. Many people are going to have to move from homes in which they have lived for many years because of a greedy council. I am not going to pay rates until something more realistic can be arrived at, and I suggest all Merivale residents do the same.—Yours, etc., G. W. FRASER. July 1, 1985.
