Alcohol abuse

Sir,—lt is indeed refreshing to read of the opinion of Superintendent Bardwell of the Dunedin Police when he states that drugs are “oneumpteenth of the problem of alcohol abuse.” (“The Press,” June 27). It is surely time for this society to see that a lot of the social deviancy that was previously attributed to drug abuse is in fact alcohol related. The drug addict, in constant supply of his drug, is a passive person by and large. The alcoholic finds “dutch courage” in his beverage and becomes a monster caught in a terrible cycle. One would hope that the superintendent is talking loud and hard to his colleagues; his is a most sane viewpoint.—Yours, etc., L. ROSS. June 28, 1985.
