Treatment of head lice
Sir,—l understand that the Department of Health is issuing to every family with children at one Christchurch primary school at least two tubes of malathion shampoo (total retail value about $9) for the control of head lice. I would like to know why public funds are being spent only on the people of this area, or can we expect assistance for other primary schools? If not, why have the people of one already-wealthy district been selected for this subsidy?—Yours, etc JAN ANDREWS. June 24. 1985. [Dr M. A. Brieseman, the Deputy Medical Officer of Health, comments: “In the recent programme of head lice treatment at the primary school your correspondent mentions, the Malathion shampoo was not provided through this office, but was prescribed by a general practitioner. Public health nurses working from this office do have supplies of shampoo available, to provide where these are unable to be obtained through a general practitioner.”]
