Fendalton Road widening

Sir,—The inhabitants of lovely Fendalton have no right to complain about a little widening of Fendalton Road. The self-styled upper class that lives there has complacently sent completely unnecessary expressways through the rest of Christchurch. Suburbs older and better than Fendalton have been torn apart. Now Fendalton is getting just a little taste of its own medicine. If it is good enough for the rest of Christchurch to be disembowelled just so cars can speed through for an hour morning and night, it is good enough for Fendalton to take less than its share without complaining. At least when Fendalton screams about its leafy loveliness the bulldozer executives immediately promise to save its trees. No such reprieve awaits the oaks of Vincent Place. No mere road-widening in Opawa, rather wholesale demolition of houses for a completely new speedway through a lovely leafy suburb. I object to the favouritism shown to Fendalton.—Yours, etc., MISS L. T. TAYLOR. June 30, 1985.
