Unlit cycles
Sir, — The New Zealand Standards Association has just released a draft standard for lighting and retroreflectors for pedal cyclists. This standard has been prepared as a result of many years of lobbying by cyclists. Hopefully the final standard will be ready by next winter. Once we have a New Zealand standard the Ministry of Transport will be able to produce more effective and enforceable regulations on cycle lighting. In the meantime, motorists should do their bit by sounding their horn as they pass unilluminated cyclists. Motorists should realise that most cyclists show up reasonably well under normal street lighting and that most cyclists are knocked off their cycles by young male motorists demonstrating their skills and their tolerance of alcohol. The use of lights and reflectors appears to offer little protection from these motorists. — Yours, etc., TIM KERR. July 1, 1985.
