‘Stress’ strike due to continue

Engineers at the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company factory at Papanui are on strike this week because of a dispute over their house agreement. The Engineers’ Union has been negotiating for several weeks for a new agreement for about 40 engineers who maintain factory machinery. Agreement was reached last week on all but two of the points under discussion. The engineers went on strike last Sunday and have said they will not return until this Sunday. A spokesman for the company said that one of the unresolved issues was

manning levels on shift rosters. The other issue was a claim by the union for five days stress leave a year. The company believed that that claim was not justified, the spokesman said. The union said its claim was justified because engineers worked alongside other employees paid on a bonus scheme and this put pressure on the engineers. Stress leave was also justified because of the long hours they worked, the spokesman said. Production of tyres was continuing but could only do so until machinery broke down, the spokesman said.
