Lions’ victim might face prosecution

PA Auckland A man whose leg was bitten off and eaten by lions at the Auckland Zoo could face prosecution for trespass. The zoo director, Mr Derek Wood, said yesterday the matter would be reported to the Auckland City Council “and no doubt they will consider where charges will be proceeded with.” One or part of the pride of nine lions attacked Mr John Earlly, aged 21, not because they were hungry but because he intruded on their territory, Mr Wood said.

“The zoo lions are being well fed and cared for, and

will not be having any need to be looking around at staff members,” he said.

Mr Earlly was in a fair condition yesterday in Auckland Hospital’s critical care unit. The lions had ripped off the lower right leg and clawed his thigh muscles to the bone.

Parts of Mr Earlly’s shredded trouser and shoe were found inside the lions’ den — lions were selective about what they ate, Mr Wood said.

It was “highly unlikely they absorbed any foreign matter,” and seemed to be in good condition although zoo staff were keeping a close eye on them, he said.
