African pair ‘may not stay’
PA Wellington Two African stowaways who arrived in New Zealand on the Operation Hope ship Ngahere are unlikely to be able to stay permanently, said the Minister of Immigration, Mr Burke, yesterday. He criticised calls by an Opposition member of Parliament, Mr Bruce Townshend, for the pair to be sent home and outlined the Government’s reasons for treating the two men as
passengers rather than stowaways. “The Government is not guaranteeing the pair the right to stay permanently, neither will they get preferential treatment,” Mr Burke said. “Unlike the Opposition, however, this Government is not going to deny two people the right to be heard. “Should they wish to apply to stay here their case will be treated entirely on its merits.”
