Nurses to march

Hundreds of nurses from throughout Canterbury are expected to join in the “nurses are worth more” march in Christchurch on Friday. A member of the nurses’ committee organising the march, Ms Jenni Tarrant, said that Friday’s march would be the first time that nurses had marched in Christchurch.

“Everybody knows about it, and everybody is talking about it. This march has the support of most of the nurses in the hospitals,” she

said. “It is a big step for nurses.” The march, which will begin at the Bridge of Remembrance at 5 p.m., will be to support the nurses’ forthcoming wage claim and to protest against staff shortages. One helium-filled balloon representing each nursing vacancy in the Canterbury Hospital Board area will be released in Cathedral Square. At the last count, there would be 134 balloons being released, said Ms Tarrant.
