Thief grabs money

A masked man snatched a bank bag from a girl as she walked along Stanmore Road, Richmond, about 10.25 a.m. yesterday. The girl, aged 16, worked for a nearby firm. She was carrying the company’s takings to a bank. She was not hurt.

Detective Sergeant David Quested said that the bag contained cheques and cash, which he described as “not a great amount.” The snatch took place at the junction of Stanmore Road and Alexandra Street. Detective Sergeant Quested has appealed for anyone who might have seen the incident to get in touch with the police. A second man, described as having black, shoulderlength, curly hair, was waiting nearby in a car. The pair drove away in a yellow 1969 Morris 1300 saloon which was reported stolen on Saturday, but has since been recovered.

The police had received reports that persons had been “hanging around” in the area recently. The man who snatched the bag is described as European with broad shoulders, slightly overweight, and about 178 cm (sft Win) tall. He had dots on his knuckles.

He wore a bold balaclava with blue hoops and holes cut for the eyes and nose, a “newish” denim jacket, and dark blue jeans.
