‘Fair’ competition allowed

PA Wellington The Government has no intention of changing the reorganisation of trade preferences which have blocked Singapore and Brunei from favoured nation treatment, says the Prime Minister, Mr Lange. “We are not proposing to change (the policy),” Mr Lange told reporters at post-caucus press conference. But he said New Zealand did not wish its decision to

be used as a lever by other countries examining their trade relationship with Singapore. Officials have said that suggestions by the Association of South East-Asian Nations trade committee would be considered. Mr Lange said he understood Singaporean “misgiving” about the preference reorganisation. “On the other hand we have ... a duty to people who work in New Zealand

factories to see that they keep working in New Zealand factories,” he said. The Minister of Overseas Trade, Mr Moore, said earlier this week that New Zealand would allow fair competition. “But we are certainly not going to be in the position where we completely allow the local workforce and the local investor to lie naked on the beach and allow any importer, to tear their hearts out,” he said.
