German sees no purpose in zone

PA Wellington The proposed South Pacific nuclear-free zone will not help achieve lasting peace in the world, says the leader of a visiting group of West German Parliamentarians. Mr Richard Stuecklen, vice-president of the German Federal Parliament, said in an interview that he personally did not see any purpose in the zone. Members of the South Pacific Forum, including New Zealand, have been working on a draft nuclearfree zone treaty over the last year and it is expected to be ready for consideration by forum leaders in August. Mr Stuecklen questioned who would “prevent the Soviet Union from interferring in the affairs of such a nuclear-free zone.” He did not think New Zealand would be in a position to prevent the Soviet Union from “not obliging with this commitment.” Asked if he believed policing the zone would be difficult, Mr Stuecklen said, “I think it could not be assured, it could not be guaranteed.” He said he believed world peace and stability had to be considered in entirety rather than regionally. What was needed, Mr Stuecklen said, was comprehensive disarmament.
