Road widening

Sir, — A report by the Canterbury United Council concludes that an additional traffic lane is required on both Madras Street and Barbadoes Street, involving the destruction of homes, shops and parks. As a community group concerned about the well-being of the people and the environment in the north-east inner city we are deeply disappointed. The whole report is based on the assumption of a traffic increase of 25 per cent, which is questionable in the light of decreasing or stagnating population figures. Even if these increases occur the report does not address the fundamental question of whether increases are desirable or not — whether to encourage or discourage traffic in the inner city. Alternatives to the private motorcar have not been studied. Planners appear preoccupied with mov-

ing cars from A to B in the quickest possible way. It seems time for them to realise that planning for the people would be more appreciated. — Yours, etc., H. SCHAPER, Te Whanau Trust. May 30, 1985.
