NZPA-AAP Brisbane The top New Zealand filly, Canterbury Belle, which finished a great firstup second to Phoenix Rising in last Saturday’s Queensland Guineas, might be a surprise starter in the $lOO,OOO Queensland Derby (2400 m at Eagle Farm on June 8.

In a revised change of plans after Canterbury Belle’s impressive Australian debut, her trainer, Dave Kerr, says the Derby is now very much on the three-year-old’s Brisbane programme. The race which Kerr will use as the decider for a Derby start will be Canterbury Belle’s next outing in the $lOO,OOO Channel 7 Classic (2020 m at Doomben on May 25. Kerr has already ruled out for the filly the $205,000 Elders Handicap (1400 m at Eagle Farm on the same day as the Derby. The New Zealand jockey, Grant Cooksley, who returned across the Tasman last Monday for home riding commitments, will be back in Queensland later this week, eager to renew his association with Canterbury Belle.
