Basketball tour an added spur
PA Tauranga A tour to Fiji in August is an added spur for players in the national under-20 men’s basketball inter-districts championships being held in Tauranga this week. A trial squad will be announced following the completion of the tournament tomorrow with the New Zealand team to compete in the South Pacific senior championships in Suva to be announced in early June. New Zealand and Australia regularly send their national junior teams to compete in the South Pacific tournament while other nations send their senior teams. The New Zealand team will consist of 12 players. However, the final squad of trialists being named this week will comprise up to 20 players.
The two teams, and likely finalists, to stand out on the first day’s play were last year’s champion, Hutt ValleyWellington, and Canterbury. Only Canterbury in a twogame programme finished the first day unbeaten in Section B while Hutt Valley-Wellington was clearly the top team in Section A. Results: Section A: Central Districts 83, Bay of Plenty-Waikato 76; Southern Districts 70, North Shore-Whangarei 60; Hutt Valley-Wellington 105, Central Districts 50; Bay of PlentyWaikato 93, North Shore-Whan-garei 75. Section B: Canterbury 104, Napier-Hastings 83; Waitemata 73, Seddon Shield Districts 63; Napier-Hastings 69, Waitemata 63; Canterbury 89, Seddon Shield 54.
