Native timber use
Sir, — Recent correspondence has shown a concern for the destruction and waste of native timbers. As a carpenter working for a large Christchurch-based construction company, I am shocked by the wastage of excellent grade rimu being used for concrete formwork. The company justifies this wastage on strictly economic grounds because it owns its own sawmill in South Westland. The use of slowgrowing, high-grade native timbers for boxing instead of fast-growing exotics shows a blatant disregard for our heritage and future. —
Yours, etc., STEPHEN CARSWELL. Blackball, March 28, 1985.
