Fire ban
Sir, — D. Pollard’s agreement “that all fires should be banned” is a challenge that cannot be ignored.
I have recently got in a load of coke and I intend to burn coke fires as often as I please and in utter defiance of D. Pollard and all his allies. The combustion of pure carbon produces pure carbon dioxide, which is essential for the health of plants and gardens. I strongly urge other believers in ancient rights to buy supplies of coke so that the open fire banners can be fought from an impregnable moral position. While the Mayor, Sir Hamish Hay, is to be congratulated for his record tenure of power, one cannot help wondering if he is gradually being corrputed by power. His support for a totalitarian ban on open fires rather than for the compromise of coke combined with his support for Labour’s undemocratic amalgamation proposals are disturbing moral signs. — Yours, etc., MARK D. SADLER. March 29, 1985.
