P.M. urged to back ‘Star Wars’
PA Wellington The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, should endorse President Reagan’s “Star Wars” programme, according to the New Zealand Party leader, Mr Jones. “The unfortunately named ‘Star Wars’ programme represents the most extraordinarily innovative approach to peace, arguably in all of history," Mr Jones said. “Its objective is totally to negate the effectiveness of any offensive action while simultaneously having no offensive function. “The faet that the Ameri-
cans have given meaning to the sincerity of their intent by offering its secrets to the Soviet Union should not be overlooked. “As a peace technique it surpasses the tried and failed international treaties and consultations,” he said. The Prime Minister, by endorsing the space defence project, could not only dispel any Allied suspicion of New Zealand’s position but simultaneously make a significant step towards the peace aim which the “emotively based, illogical nuclear-ship ban” would never achieve, Mr Jones said.
