Charles, Lister in combination

PA Auckland Two of New Zealand’s greatest professional golfers, Bob Charles and John Lister, will team today for the $lO,OOO Repco New Zealand P.G.A. foursomes championship at Remuera. Charles has never won the foursomes title. The event is growing in popularity after lapsing for three years.

It was first played in 1927 when Ernie Moss and Andy Shaw were successful. Shaw went on to win the title another eight times, the last in 1951 with Peter Thomson,

of Australia. In the heady days of the championship, the winners included such top golfers as Thomson and Kel Nagle, Bruce Devlin and Ted Ball, and Norman von Nida and Bruce Crampton, all of Australia.

Thirty-four teams of professionals will join invited amateurs in today’s tournament. Among the pairings will be Simon Owen and Barry Vivian, Stuart Reese and Pat Mateer, Frank Nobilo and Dennis Clark, lan Smalley and Bruce Soland, and Mike Moynihan and John Croskery.
