Top players in tournament

David Lewis, who made his debut for the. New Zealand Davis Cup tennis team last week-end will play in an invitation tournament at the Edgeware club this week-end.

The Denis Stollery tournament will have prizemoney of $l5OO and will also feature the Wellington No. 1 player, James Dunphy, and leading Canterbury players. With the exception of Peter Hampton, whose leg is encased in plaster, the Canterbury team which won the Wilding Shield in the inter-district championship two weeks ago will play in the tournament.

The players will be divided into two pools of four, and will play a roundrobin competition. The winners of each pqol will

play off in a grand final on Sunday afternoon. The winner will earn more than $3OO said the organiser of the tournament, Mr Michael Mooney. The Canterbury players in the tournament will be Stephen Harley, Brett Hibbert, Graeme Liddell, Philip Seeman, Rhett Mason and Hugh Robinson. Pavroc Holdings will meet the expenses of Lewis and Dunphy for the tournament, and Avon Roofing is providing a $2OO prize for the player who serves the most aces over the two days. The tournament will give Christchurch people the chance to see the champion Canterbury men’s team against two of the most accomplished players in New Zealand.
