Hockey invitation from West Germany
The New Zealand hockey team has been invited to play in a four-nation tournament in West Germany before the Inter-Continental Cup tournament in Spain later this year. The invitation was received by the New Zealand Hockey Association this week. The dates for the tournament are September 20 to 22 and the venue has yet to be decided.
The N.Z.H.A. has sent a cable back to the West German Hockey Federation asking that the dates be put
back a week because they do not suit the New Zealand team’s itinerary.
The New Zealand team plans to be in England at the time of the German tournament. If the Germans agree to put their tournament back a week, New Zealand will play in it and then move to the Netherlands for further games before travelling to Barcelona and the inter-Continental Cup.
the Germans have offered to meet all costs for the New Zealand team for
five days, but they could not say which other two teams would be in the quadrangular tournament.
The secretary of the N.Z.H.A., Mr Allan Barrett, said that the New Zealand coach, Mr Trevor Blake, was keen to play in the tournament as part of the team’s build-up to the Barcelona tournament.
New Zealand has to finish in the first five in Spain to qualify for the World Cup in London in October, 1986.
