AUSTRALIA Resources easier

NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed little changed on a day of active trading yesterday, with solid support for local industrial stocks offsetting general weakness among the resource issues. At 3.15 p.m., the all-ordin-aries index was 0.4 points firmer at 778.2, the all-indus-trials index was up 1.9 points at 1170.1, and the all-resources indicator was down 0.7 points at 477.8. National turnover totalled 41.30 M shares worth about sAustss.l2M. Rises outnumbered falls 200 to 155. Situation stocks were moderately active with Life Savers, for which the Nestle Group has made a $3.30 takeover offer, up 2c at $3.58 on turnover of about 970,000 shares. Wormaid, which is speculated as a possible take-over stock, closed 5c up at $3.40 after trading as high as $3.55 on the day. Buyers returned to Allied

Mills, the food group’s price gaining 5c to $3.05 on turnover of 503,378. Allied’s running mate, Arnotts, slid 4c to $3.95 on modest turnover, and Hooker closed steady at $2.11 on turnover of 632,500. Keen interest was maintained in high-technology issues, Vapocure leading the pack to close 60c firmer at $6.30. Sarich gained 10c to close on the day’s high of $5.00 on turnover of 169,800 shares.
