Shipping news Ship brings fruit, loads lamb

Canterbury fruit shops will be well stocked this week with the arrival of the Samoan Reefer at Lyttelton. The 5915-ton general cargo vessel berthed at the No. 3 wharf on January 29 laden with fruit from Ecuador and Spain. She discharged 18,009 cartons of bananas, 815 cartons of lemons, 10,584 cartons of oranges, and 48 cartons of limes. On completion of the discharge the Samoan Reefer began loading about 2200 tons of Canterbury lamb and a quantity of seafood products for Korea and Japan. Loading is expected to be completed early next week. The Samoan Reefer, which is run by the Laurenson Line, is a familiar caller at New Zealand ports. The ship’s Danish master, Captain John Brinch Jensen, has made several calls to Lyttelton with the Laurenson Line. The Samoan Reefer carries mainly refrigerated cargoes and was built at Esbjerg, Denmark, in 1973. ARRIVALS Yuko Maru 58 (9 a.m.), 387 sea (Guthreys). Seishu Maru 8 (8 a.m.), 374, sea (Seatrans).
