Clothing dispute settled

An industrial dispute at the Burnside clothing firm of R. J. Smillie and Company was settled yesterday, almost three months after it started. The company and the Canterbury Clothing Workers’ Union issued a joint statement saying that at a meeting in Christchurch yesterday agreement had been reached, and all bans and action against the company lifted.

The statement did not say whether the staff of 24 who went on strike over the dismissal of two of their colleagues and over other grievances would re reinstated. It is believed that some of the original staff either found other jobs in the industry or left it, but that most have been out of work and have been picketing the factory daily, on roster.
