Aickin follows Turner home
PA Auckland The Auckland golfer, Philip Aickin, has followed Greg Turner’s lead and quit his scholarship at the University of Oklahoma. But while Turner has turned to the professional ranks to seek fame and fortune, Aickin, for the time being, is remaining strictly amateur. The 23-year-old Aickin, who has been in Oklahoma for the past two and a half years, has returned home slightly disillusioned with the glamour of a eolf scholarship.
“I didn’t like the golf atmosphere there, and finance was difficult after the devaluation of our dollar,” he said.
"Over the past two years, my game went stagnant I just never took off in leaps and bounds like Greg (Turner). “Now that I’m home with my family I will get my golf together, think it over for the next year and then reassess my position. I may change my mind on a golfing career. But I’ve enjoyed my amateur golf in New Zealand and will probably keep it that way.”
