Gun thought not to be from robbery
PA Auckland The police have virtually ruled out the possibility that a shotgun recovered from an Ellerslie hedge was used in the robbery of a security van in Birkenhead on Friday evening. Detective Inspector Mike Charles said last evening that witnesses thought the barrel of the recovered gun was too long. He said the gun had been stolen on Thursday from a flat near where it was found.
Police investigating the robbery of more than $200,000 from an Armourguard security van outside a Foodtown supermarket. at Birkenhead said a caravan would be outside the premises this morning. Witnesses of the robbery have been invited to speak to the officer on duty. A team of 30 police was searching for the two shot-gun-toting robbers and a driver who made off in a stolen white van, which was recovered in Glenfield on Saturday.
