Cup tours cut by devaluation
PA Auckland Devaluation has forced the cancellation of at least three Melbourne Cup tours. Travel agents in Auckland say the number of New Zealanders flying to Australia on package tours is down dramatically on previous years. For the first time in 10 years, a former top jockey, Norm Holland, will not lead jtadio Pacific’s Jim Smith confirmed that “devaluation really put the kybosh” on his tour. “We had a huge response to start with, but people who go on these tours budget for a certain amount
and devaluation wrecked that.” A sports broadcaster, Barry Holland, still had a “couple of dozen” people prepared to pay about $l6OO, but numbers were definitely down on last year’s, he said. One travel agent had to scratch a tour headed by the racing tipster, Mike Dillon.-, . ; ► The former, Cambridge jockey, Linda Jones, * will lead a tour but she said: “As soon as they devalued I thought I wouldn’t be surprised if everyone pulled out. I’ve got 50 people coming with me, but I know not nearly as many as usual are going,” she said.
