Constable foils jewel theft
PA A Wellington Wellington police constable said he was embarrassed by publicity after he had foiled a 520,000 jewel theft in the city centre early yesterday. Constable Ross McKay arrested three persons after a smash and grab raid on a jewellery shop. To make the arrests he chased two of the would-be thieves along a city mall and when they got into a car he climbed in through the rear window and then snatched the ignition keys as the car was driven away. “I was quite pleased with the way things went,” he said. However Constable McKay said he was a little
embarrassed by radio reports of the incident. “The last thing I heard it had me diving through the window of the car as it sped away from the scene. It wasn’t quite like that.” The car had been stopped when he climbed through the window, he said.
